Maker & Merchant getting bigger and better – our dream studio is getting close to reality!!

A few months have passed since the renovation began in January and the studio space is taking shape. The new Maker & Merchant studio will include a purpose built sewing machine station, and space for all of our fabrics, cushion inserts, trims, inks and paints. We’ll have a custom designed cutting table, meeting table and dedicated printing space on the deck.

The studio is at the far end of the garden looking over the house to Mt Cootha, very Brisbane.

We are dreaming of space!! Previously we worked almost entirely on our deck and used 2 bedrooms for storage – the entire house was taken over with Maker & Merchant stock and supplies.  It will be a relief to finally have some separation between our studio life and home.

Most of the time we were working in organised chaos each time it looked like rain, the tarpaulins were unfolded and the entire studio was cocooned until the weather was fine again.  Lucky we live in the Sunshine State!

Most of the tile shopping is done, including some lovely encaustic tile from Jantana Interiors  Flores, and we are looking forward to seeing some lovely tiles in the studio bathroom very soon.

Tap ware and lights are finalised for the studio– and we’re keen to move in and use the space.

The re-modelling of the house in taking longer, with most of the demolition done and the walls taken back to studs – now the building begins.

We’ve had many discussions about space, finishes and even dog doors, which are continuing and at this halfway point it’s starting to get a bit exciting!

Maker & Merchant Renovation – Part 1

So 2016 is going to be a super year for Maker & Merchant, we’re finally going to have a studio with walls!

Yes a large scale renovation is happening at, what our family calls, Twintel (Part home – part hotel)

This year we’re all about the design, building and decoration of the new studio; 16 X 5 metres of new creative space with and additional outside deck area, so we remember where we started.

worldsbestoffice

The builders will be on site this month, we spent the best part of last year working with the Architect making sure every square foot worked.

The studio is only part of the build, we are renovating most of the old 1930’s timber house, only keeping the original spaces left after a 1980’s reno, by previous owners, and the front façade.

We’ve started the exhausting job of choosing finishes and colours. Giving us a chance to think about more that fabric! More to come about our choices.

Here are some before photos. Firstly the garden, and I’m hoping we still end up with plenty of green space for the pups.

pre reno 5

All the pokey hallways and dark trim will be totally changing.  we’re opting for open spaces and light and white this time.

pre reno 2

We have got so used to the small, and smaller bathrooms – it’s going to be such a luxury using both arms instead of twirling around the small space like a mad Irish dancer!

pre reno 3

The lounge will turn into a quiet guest room – with reclaimed glass doors to define the space – and lacking the current ambiance, cupboards full of cushion inserts ready to assault unsuspecting visitors.

pre reno 5

And finally the office will be transformed into a casual cocktail space with access to the front deck. Perfect for casual summer dining!

A Maker & Merchant autumn, Brisbane in blue and orange

This is one of my favourite seasons to be in home in Brisbane. Those cool quiet nights, edging towards scarf weather and the glorious sunny days of big blue skies. At Maker & Merchant HQ we love starting work with a coffee and a sunny corner, planning the day as we watch the dew evaporate from the lawn.

As the afternoon spectacular turns to dusk I like to make what we call CC’s Super Pumpkin Soup.

CC's Super Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients for Pumpkin Soup

Cut up one Queensland Blue Pumpkin to roast leaving the skin on. Coat pumpkin pieces in olive oil, a touch of smoked paprika, season with sea & pepper, and add final grate of nutmeg.  Break up a head of lovely Australian garlic and distribute through oil on the tray. We also roast a couple of red chillies whole.  Place in the oven at 180 for about 45 minutes, until very soft.

Ready to roast

Pumpkin ready to roast

Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly on the tray.

In a large soup pot peel the pumpkin pieces away from the skin and put the flesh in the pot. Squeeze the sweet centre out of the roasted garlic and add to the pot. You can also add the red chillies. You can slice them finely as is or remove the seeds for less heat.

In a separate pot warm up some chicken stock, you can use vegetable as well.  You’ll need about 1-2 cups depending on the pumpkin.

Once the stock is warm, puree the pumpkin with a stick blender, add in one can of coconut cream or milk and continue to blend.  Now add the stock gradually continuing to blend until you reach a consistency you like.  At this point you can bring the heat up on the pot to a simmer.  You’ll need to taste the soup, sometimes the pumpkin and garlic are very sweet and I like to temper this with a splash of fish sauce.

I serve this with fresh sour dough.

Evenings are perfect for feasting on this simple soup and wrapping yourself in a lovely quilt and surrounded by wool, leather and metallic cushions, reading some epic novel, a glossy magazine or delving through Pinterest.  http://pinterest.com/makermerchant/

Warming up the reindeer for Finders Keepers next weekend!

We can’t wait for Finders Keepers Market next weekend! We love it!

Being a mainly online based store it’s a definite  treat for us to get out and about and talk with our customers and other designers about current and upcoming trends and to see the fantastic work other local designers are producing! We can only imagine that the carnival atmosphere of Finders Keepers will be extreme as we jettison into the festive season!

Here is some of our work that you’ll be able to find at the markets next weekend!

handdrawn_ned_gallahs

We’re still all about bright summer colours … we’ve stocked up on our hand drawn favorites;  neons pink, yellow and  orange and we’re bringing along some new Australiana cushion designs too – we’re feeling very patriotic.

palms

Dreamy days by the beach, warm summer breezes, tropical cocktails and Panama hats have inspired a new range of hand dyed, hand painted linen cushions.

wallets

Our farmed kangaroo leather wallets were a favourite last time, and they make a great Christmas gift! In addition to tan, our new range in black is lined with a hand printed Story Bridge detail in neon green or neon red a second leather pocket inside for cards. The soft gold wallets are lined with hand printed antler print linen.

Summer-weight patchwork blankets for kids and adults

We’ve made a special effort to expand our range of summer weight bamboo, cotton and hand drawn linen quilts to include some fabulous gifts for the little ones, and not so little ones too.

teatowels

And of course we’ll have our tea towels range including this Christmas set! Perfect for a Christmas hamper or stocking filler.

We’ve got a new and improved spot this time at the market with more room and more stock!

You’ll find us at the beginning in Studio #1, store 205.

Come along to the Old Museum next weekend and say hello!

New and unique homewares for spring and summer

Here at Maker & Merchant HQ we are so glad it’s finally spring!

Over the winter we have been working away on a new Spring/Summer range and are super excited to finally reveal …

New cushions from Maker and Merchant

A peek at Maker & Merchant’s new range

Hand dyed and painted linen cushions in a bright colour pallet have us very excited.  Our inspiration for this range is found on the corner of street from Brisbane to Miami.  Yes its neon, but carefully tempered with subtle linen hand dyed for each style.

We are also fine tuning the designs for a range of what is shaping up to be very lovely cotton voile scarves inspired by the beauty of Indian traditional block prints with a Bambi twist. The finished product will be a luxuriously large, light weight, perfect for summer, must have accessory. I want one now!

Maker & Merchant are getting Out and About!

Our home wares are now available at 2 locations in Brisbane.

Brisbane Finders Keepers Markets 6 & 7 July: an abundance of hand made homewares and unique designs

Our first ever Finders Keepers experience on the weekend was wonderful!  We had a very successful and fun couple of days and received some really positive feedback on our pieces, which is so exciting!

Insider with M & M

Our market space in studio 3 at the Old Museum

We’ve been to Finders Keepers before as shoppers, but we’ve never sat on the other side of the table.  We met some great people including some fabulous designers and craftspeople.

Finders Keepers wrote a beautiful blog about our label in the days before the market which meant lots of people came and said “hello”, making us feel right at home. Read the post here.

The quality and variety of goods on offer at the markets was super, teamed with great food and drink and lovely music, all wrapped in some perfect Brisbane weather!

It’s very difficult to choose a few designs to feature, but there are a few that we really loved, starting with our near neighbours all making their first appearance at the markets in studio 3.

Elke Lucas creates some beautiful hand thrown porcelain using lovely organic shapes and lines with a beautiful feel and texture; people couldn’t seem to put them down.  You can see all of her lovely pieces at Elke Lucas Ceramics

Right next to our stall was The Thinktree where Laura had some beautiful paper products, including cards and prints. Laura’s designs are beautifully finished and put smiles on faces with her wonderfully unique greeting cards.  You can see more of Laura’s designs at thethinktree

Featured designers

Jennifer Orland’s jewellery pieces, Laura from TheTHINKTREE, textile design from SitStayGO, Margeaux’s little creatures from Red tree designs, Trish’s designs from SitStayGO and ceramic pieces by Elke Lucas

SitStayGO from Melbourne creates beautiful textile wares created from watercolour paintings digitally printed on to linen.  Trish’s designs are colourful and fun, detailing beautiful organic patterns.   SitStayGO

Margeaux from Red Tree Designs produces individually handmade pieces from upcycled materials including purses, bags and delightful little fabric creatures.  You can see all Margeaux’s designs in her ETSY store Red tree designs

In studio 2 I met Jennifer Orland who produces lovely works from clay including some wonderful jewellery pieces with inspiration drawn from history, art, fashion and nature.

Finders Keepers Brisbane markets was a super event and we can’t wait until it returns in November!

Handmade homeware and some upcycling for a Brisbane winter treat

Upcycling

Upcycling Onkaparinga is in the breeze this season.  We have created a range of bespoke cushions from vintage Australian made Onkaparinga Blankets. Onkaparinga (aaah) opened it’s woollen mill, and built it’s reputation, from 1872 with the finest, top shelf, quality blankets.

Woollen & Plaid

Inspired by Stuart Membery, Alexander McQueen, and of course Vivienne Westwood, our winter collection of plaid and woollen cushions are perfect for napping on the sofa or power discing your favourite series, while the slow cooker does its thing with dinner. Why not change your style for the season with a few key bespoke cushions.

Leather & Skin

Inspired by ‘Winterfell’ quality leather and skin feature in our Luxury collection this season. All our leather is from sustainably farmed Kangaroo.  The quality of kangaroo leather means it is softer and more durable than cow hide and is used in other manufacture like motorcycle leather and high end fashion. Only the best!

Pom Pom Pom…

Pom poms really make the world a much brighter, better place.  Here at Maker & Merchant we have a delightful collection of pom-poms and trims direct from the markets at Sham Shui Po to add to the winter 2013/2014 range of home wares.
